Courteney Cox Originally Had Jen Aniston’s Rachel Role on Friends!

Friday, Apr 13, 2012

Monica as Rachel? Jo as Monica?!

Before a young unknown named Jennifer Aniston entered the equation, Courteney Cox was originally cast as Rachel on Friends — and Facts of Life star Nancy McKeon was set to play Monica, which Cox ultimately took on. The role of Chandler that eventually went to Matthew Perry was originally given to lesser-known actor Craig Bierko.

And, indeed, Friends almost wasn’t Friends — the NBC smash sitcom’s original title was Six of One. “We thought [that title] was such a snore,” former NBC exec Karey Burke says in the May Vanity Fair’s “Oral History of Friends” story, as excerpted in Thursday’s Page Six. “Some people thought the show was too Gen X, way too narrow.”

Before landing the Chandler role, Perry, 42, was originally set to star in a show called LAX 2194, about baggage handlers of the future. Debuting in 1994, Friends lasted for 10 seasons and became one of the most successful and beloved sitcoms ever, with each cast member (also including Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc) netting $1 million per episode for the final seasons.
Also revealed in the “Oral History”: The cast hated the romantic pairing of Rachel (Aniston) and Joey (LeBlanc). “It felt wildly inappropriate,” LeBlanc says. “[The cast] got super-defensive about the whole thing.”

Friends’ Central Perk coffee shop sofa goes under the hammer

Saturday, Dec 10, 2011

It’s been part of the furniture on the hit U.S. comedy Friends since the first show.

Now the iconic orange sofa the stars sat on in the fictional Central Perk coffee shop is for sale.

It is set to fetch between $4,000 and $6,000 when it goes under the hammer next week at the Icons of Hollywood auction in Beverly Hills. Other keepsakes from the sitcom include Courteney Cox’s character Monica’s rocking horse poster, the broken yellow peephole frame on her door and a jar of pickles from the Friends set.

And there’s a snow globe given to the Friends cast members –  Jennifer Aniston, Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer – as a Christmas gift.

Fans of the show, which ran for 10 seasons, can also buy the framed art, by pop artist Burton Morris, that hung on Central Perk’s walls.

Film aficionados will be able to bid for the ruby slippers and Cowardly Lion costume from The Wizard of Oz, the DeLorean sports car from Back to the Future III, Steve McQueen’s Le Mans racing suit and Bela Lugosi’s Dracula cape.

There are also exclusive items from the estates of movie icons Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe.
