‘Cougar Town’: Courteney Cox, Josh Hopkins Surprised by Onscreen Engagement

Tuesday, Feb 21, 2012

Now that Jules and Grayson are taking the plunge during the comedy’s third season, the actors tell THR about the show’s unconventional romantic timeline — and whether a pregnancy might be next.

Co-creators Bill Lawrence and Kevin Biegel had been discussing the marital plot for months. But when the script originally came through, series stars Courteney Cox and Josh Hopkins were caught off guard by how quickly it all happened.

“When we got together as quickly as we did,” Hopkins told The Hollywood Reporter at the show’s recent Paley Center for Media panel, “I thought, ‘Here we go. How long till they break up?’ But I’m not as smart as Bill and the writers.”

The move has afforded them a different way to play the TV romance. The duo got together before the end of the freshman season, where most comedies, arguably, would have stretched out the tension for some time. (Cox’s Monica didn’t pair up with Matthew Perry’s Chandler until the end of Friends’ fourth season.)

“I think it’s refreshing to not do the cliche ‘will they, won’t they,'” Hopkins said. “We’ve explored a relationship from the beginning pretty deeply — an adult relationship. And I think that’s been a lot more comedic.”

Cox, also impressed with the speed of the engagement, was less surprised when the writers didn’t throw too many obstacles in Jules and Grayson’s way.

“I didn’t know I’d be marrying him,” she told THR, “but you could tell from [the pilot] where they were going. But I loved that they did it in a way that was pretty quick. Because now we are dealing with the issues of relationships, opposed to ‘Will they? Won’t they? Are they going to be together?’ It’s a different take on it.”

One issue to expect them dealing with ahead of the previously disclosed season-ending wedding is whether or not the couple might have kids.

The Season 2 finale found Jules giving into Grayson’s need a be a dad, despite her previous assertion that she wouldn’t have another child after Travis (Dan Byrd).

“Grayson [has] full-on baby fever,” said Hopkins, “and that is fully addressed, in an odd way consistent with [the series], this season.”

Cox also spoke of a possible pregnancy, saying that the potential parenthood storyline isn’t dealt with in a “traditional” manner.

And if a baby isn’t in the cards this season, the cast certainly hopes there is time for that and more down the line.

“I want it to go on and on and on.” Cox told THR of her slightly ratings-challenged series. “And I hope all the fans that love the show just scream it out, because we need more.”

Friends’ Central Perk coffee shop sofa goes under the hammer

Saturday, Dec 10, 2011

It’s been part of the furniture on the hit U.S. comedy Friends since the first show.

Now the iconic orange sofa the stars sat on in the fictional Central Perk coffee shop is for sale.

It is set to fetch between $4,000 and $6,000 when it goes under the hammer next week at the Icons of Hollywood auction in Beverly Hills. Other keepsakes from the sitcom include Courteney Cox’s character Monica’s rocking horse poster, the broken yellow peephole frame on her door and a jar of pickles from the Friends set.

And there’s a snow globe given to the Friends cast members –  Jennifer Aniston, Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer – as a Christmas gift.

Fans of the show, which ran for 10 seasons, can also buy the framed art, by pop artist Burton Morris, that hung on Central Perk’s walls.

Film aficionados will be able to bid for the ruby slippers and Cowardly Lion costume from The Wizard of Oz, the DeLorean sports car from Back to the Future III, Steve McQueen’s Le Mans racing suit and Bela Lugosi’s Dracula cape.

There are also exclusive items from the estates of movie icons Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe.

‘Cougar Town’ cut down: ABC wants fewer episodes

Wednesday, Nov 23, 2011

Cougar Town might not get a happy ending.

Earlier today ABC announced its midseason premiere dates with the Courteney Cox series notably absent from the list. Now comes word that the comedy’s episode order has been reduced from 22 to 15 half hours this season.
ABC has been fortunate enough to have launched a couple successful new comedies in the fall, with Suburgatory doing really well and Last Man Standing performing okay. The bigger surprise has been last season’s midseason effort Happy Endings, which grew into a solid partner for Modern Family — in Cougar Town‘s 9:30 p.m. slot.

Insiders say the reduction is all about managing their inventory needs, and not a slight against the show, and it’s true enough that if Cougar Town performs strong for its 15 episode order when it finally does return sometime this season, ABC wouldn’t be shy about ordering more. So, a bummer for fans, but not a death sentence.

Cox-Arquette relationship comedy sold to NBC

Monday, Oct 17, 2011

Amicable exes David Arquette and Courteney Cox have their next collaboration lined up after his run on “Dancing With the Stars”: The “Scream” co-stars’ new series about a recently split couple has been sold to NBC.

ABC Studios announced Tuesday that it has sold the comedy, “10 Years,” as well as the drama “The Next Insanely Great Thing” to NBC, the former home of Cox’s “Friends.” She now stars on ABC’s “Cougar Town.”

Since their separation last year after 11 years of marriage, Cox and Arquette have continued to collaborate, including on the Howard Morris-written show that bears striking similarities to their real life. Executive produced by Arquette and Cox with Morris, it tracks the 10-year relationship of a separated couple and the people around them.

Cox and the couple’s daughter, Coco, have appeared repeatedly on “Dancing With the Stars” to cheer for Arquette.

“The Next Insanely Great Thing” takes place in a company town in which residents agree to become test subjects for a high-tech company’s social media experiments. The experiments bring the town closer together as they take surprising, funny, and emotional turns. The show is written by Daniel Taplitz, who executive produces with Ian Sanders and Kim Moses.
