Scream 4 Exclusive: Emma Roberts To Join Cast

Thursday, May 27, 2010

With filming set to begin at the end of June, Weinstein’s Dimension Films is furiously putting its Scream 4 cast together. Young upstart Emma Roberts is set to join the ensemble team of Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Neve Campbell. And while the script from Kevin Williamson is being kept under wraps, sources tell EW.com that Roberts is expected to play Jill, one of the film’s primary heroines. Scream 4 returns to Woodsboro, the home of Sidney Prescott (Campbell). And Roberts will play a role similar to Campbell’s star-turning one in the original.

“I’m so excited to be part of this ground-breaking franchise,” says Roberts, who’s best known for playing Nancy Drew and last year’s Hotel for Dogs. “It’s the perfect opportunity for me to do something completely different than I’ve ever done before.” Director/producer Wes Craven adds, “Emma’s talent, beauty, and range will add immensely to the sophistication, intensity, and fun of the Scream franchise as it returns to the screen once more.”

The three Scream movies has generated close to $300 million domestically. This latest iteration will shoot in and around Ann Arbor, Michigan beginning June 28.

Scream 4 Teaser Poster and Wes Craven Interview

Thursday, Apr 29, 2010

Can’t wait to see this. Aside Friends, Cougar Town and of course Dirt. Scream has been my favorite project of Courteney. I just love bitchy Gale lol!

EW currently has an interview with Wes Craven, the only director the “Scream” franchise has ever known and will probably ever know if he has anything to do with it. The folks at EW were also kind enough to include a much-too-small version of the “Scream 4? teaser poster (to your left). It’s EW, they always go for the small pics for some strange reason. Maybe they’re trying to save bandwidth? Or maybe they’re just clueless. Either/or.

Here are the “Scream 4? parts of the interview (the rest is about horror as a genre, etc). First up, what’s been going on with Sid, Gale, Dewey, and who are these “new kids” that are supposed to take over the franchise after part four?

“It’s a total integration of those three and new kids. The story of Sid, Gale, and Dewey is very much a part of the movie… There have been 10 years of no Ghostface, but there has been the movie-within-a-movie Stab. We have fun with the idea of endless sequels, or “sequelitis” as Kevin calls it in the script. Sid goes through these three horrendous things, and Stab was based on those horrible things. And then they’ve been taken by a studio and run into the ground in a series of sequels. She has been off by herself and living her own life, and she’s even written a book that has gotten a lot of critical acclaim. She’s kind of put her life back together in the course of these 10 years. But, certainly, there would be no Scream without Ghostface, so she has to confront him again, but now as a woman who has really come out the darkness of her past.”

Talk about post-modern hip. Williamson is writing about “sequelitis” in the script for “Scream 4? when “Scream 4? itself is the victim of just — a totally manufactured sequel made because the people involved, well, kinda all need a hit at the moment. Really, it’s as simple as that, and trying to deny it would be just plain silly.

So, will they continue to open the film with a death, or would that be just a tad too familiar? Or, as Williamson might put it, too “self-aware”?

“That’s a strong possibility. [Laughs] Certainly, you will recognize what Bob calls the DNA of the film: a very complex murder mystery, a shocking action picture, wonderful humor based on character, and lots of surprises, as well as a movie that kind of copies itself. It’s a pretty amazing script.”

I have nothing against people making a buck as long as there’s an audience for it, and there is very much still an audience for a “Scream” movie. And according to the poster, “Scream 4? will make its case for still being relevant when it opens April 15, 2011.

Wes Craven Still “In Discussions” Over Scream 4

Wednesday, Feb 24, 2010

Last week was a mad flurry of excitement over the announcement, via the L.A. Times, that Scream 4 was gearing up to shoot in May. Turns out it was a load of old cobblers. Will this counter-news derail the start date or is Craven playing with us like a serial killer with a victim? Or failing that – he’s giving us the lowdown on what’s happening with it all. The godfather of modern horror made his own announcement via Twitter:

“SCREAM 4 – LA Times has it wrong. I’m still in talks but nothing has been finalized.”

Scream 4 looks set to reunite the surviving members of the cast and is set back in the town of Woodsboro, where it all began. Courtney Cox-Arquette, husband David, Neve Campbell have confirmed they’ll be back for more gore and Scooby-Doo like shenanigans, and even better, Kevin Williamson has written the script. If you recall he walked after Scream 2, leaving Ehren Kruger to finish off with the lacklustre Scream 3. Whether Scream 4 actually happens with Craven remains to be seen. It would be madness for another director to take this on.

Craven has another horror film coming out this year with My Soul To Take. So there you have it, folks. Expect an announcement on Craven’s position soon…ish.

Kevin Williamson Offers More on Scream 4

Friday, Jan 29, 2010

The promise of a new Scream trilogy has a lot of fans buzzing as like it or not, the franchise totally revitalized the tired slasher subgenre in the 1990’s. It seems that every so often we get a little more news on the upcoming Scream 4 to entice us further. Ready for the latest? Read on!

In an interview with IESB Williamson dropped the following:

“I’m almost done with the first draft of Scream 4,” he tells the site. “I’m trying to get that together for Wes Craven. We’ve got to get going on that, during the [Vampire Diaries] hiatus. We have Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and Dave Arquette. I was always holding out hope because the pitch was about those three characters. I didn’t want to have to re-route the whole story. We don’t have to do that. I can do it exactly the way I wanted. The story is going to be told the way I originally conceived it.”

As for who will be picking up the knife as Ghostface:

“Well, that’s the whole point of the movie. What I have always liked about this movie versus other horror films is that I feel like there are characters. In other horror movies you remember Michael Meyers and you remember Jason. In our film I think you remember Sydney Prescott because Sydney Prescott’s the victim and she has lasted for all three of these movies. The fun of the film is that it’s Sydney Prescott. That’s the difference, and you care about her. I want to write a story where you actually care about our characters and it’s a plot that you watch them walk through. It’s not all about the next kill. It’s not all about slice and dice. I was watching Saw VI on pay-per-view the other night, and I was like, ‘This is really just going from one kill to the next to the next.’ It’s fun, but I want to tell a story.”

During the interview Williamson also verifies he’s confirmed for Scream 4 and Scream 5 but is still in negotiations for Scream 6. Hit up the link for the entire interview.
