Courteney Cox on ‘Friends’ reunion, ‘Cougar Town’ Season 5 (Spoilers)
Courteney Cox joked to OTRC.com that she and her former co-stars are “way too old” for one. She made her comments in a recent joint interview with Josh Hopkins, her co-star of the TBS comedy series “Cougar Town,” which returns for season 5 on Tuesday, Jan. 7. Check out videos of OTRC.com’s interview with Cox and Hopkins, as well as 3 highlights below.
1. On the possibility of a “Friends” reunion …
Fellow “Friends” alum Matthew Perry is set to appear on “Cougar Town” this season and star as a potential love interest for Cox’s character, Jules.
The two played couple Monica and Chandler on “Friends,” which aired between 1994 and 2004. The comedy series will mark its 20th anniversary this September. When asked about the possibility of a “Friends” reunion,” Cox told OTRC.com: “We are way too old to be showing what we look like from that to that. No, we’re not doing one.”
“David Arquette used to have a great idea and he said, ‘What if you guys do an episode of ‘Friends’ every Thanksgiving. Just come back for that one week to say what is everyone doing in the last year … and we didn’t listen, we didn’t do it, so now it’s too late,” she added, recalling her ex-husband’s words.
“Fans want it. Come on,” Hopkins said.
“”You’ve never even seen the show,” Cox replied.
“I saw one,” he said.
2. On working with “Friends” alum Matthew Perry again …
There have been several “Friends” mini-reunions on TV. Former stars Jennifer Aniston and Lisa Kudrow have also appeared on “Cougar Town.” Also, Cox had last year guest starred on Perry’s short-lived NBC comedy series, “Go On.”
“Matthew Perry’s in our second episode, which was great,” Cox told OTRC.com, regarding his guest appearance on “Cougar Town.” “We’re so comfortable. The only difficult was to remind ourselves that we don’t know each other, in this episode.”
“We’re strangers that meet,” she said. “I lose my insurance, my car insurance, because I’m not that bright, and I end up hitting his car and then I have to flirt my way out of it and hope that he won’t … claim it, because I can’t pay it.”
3. On her “Cougar Town” son’s new relationship …
“Travis, my [Jules’] son [played by Dan Byrd], is dating my best friend, Laurie [played by Busy Philipps],” Cox said. “So that’s uncomfortable for me at the beginning but I act like it’s not but it truly is. Have to get past that.”

The comedy, which ended its run on ABC in 2012, will return for a 13-episode order in 2014.
TBS is sticking with Cougar Town. The ABC Studios production, which left its broadcast network home in 2012, has received an order for another season at the cable network.
The Turner-owned network announced the renewal on Monday, though the new order of 13 episodes is shy of the current season’s 15-episode run.
“Cougar Town has been everything we hoped it would be: a smart, big-hearted, laugh-out-loud comedy that shines a bright light on the TBS brand,” said TBS, TNT and TCM president and head of programming Michael Wright. “This season, the brilliant cast and immensely creative production team on Cougar Town have crafted their best episodes yet, and we couldn’t be happier inviting them back for more.”
Starring Courteney Cox, Christa Miller, Busy Philipps, Dan Byrd, Ian Gomez, Josh Hopkins and Brian Van Holt, Cougar Town was let go by ABC last spring after the third season experienced a drop in ratings.
On TBS, Cougar Town has seen a relatively steady ratings performance with 2.8 million viewers and 1.7 million adults 18-49 in Live+Seven Day delivery. In the key demographic, it’s the network’s top-performing original primetime series ever. In Live+Same, Cougar Town hit a high in February with 2.43 million viewers in one episode.
Since co-creators Bill Lawrence and Kevin Biegel departed the day-to-day of the show following its move to TBS, Ric Swartzlander has served as showrunner.
Cougar Town‘s current season comes to an end on April 9
