TBS Renews Cougar Town for Season 5

Wednesday, Mar 27, 2013

The comedy, which ended its run on ABC in 2012, will return for a 13-episode order in 2014.

TBS is sticking with Cougar Town. The ABC Studios production, which left its broadcast network home in 2012, has received an order for another season at the cable network.

The Turner-owned network announced the renewal on Monday, though the new order of 13 episodes is shy of the current season’s 15-episode run.

Cougar Town has been everything we hoped it would be: a smart, big-hearted, laugh-out-loud comedy that shines a bright light on the TBS brand,” said TBS, TNT and TCM president and head of programming Michael Wright. “This season, the brilliant cast and immensely creative production team on Cougar Town have crafted their best episodes yet, and we couldn’t be happier inviting them back for more.”

Starring Courteney Cox, Christa Miller, Busy Philipps, Dan Byrd, Ian Gomez, Josh Hopkins and Brian Van HoltCougar Town was let go by ABC last spring after the third season experienced a drop in ratings.

On TBS, Cougar Town has seen a relatively steady ratings performance with 2.8 million viewers and 1.7 million adults 18-49 in Live+Seven Day delivery. In the key demographic, it’s the network’s top-performing original primetime series ever. In Live+Same, Cougar Town hit a high in February with 2.43 million viewers in one episode.

Since co-creators Bill Lawrence and Kevin Biegel departed the day-to-day of the show following its move to TBS, Ric Swartzlander has served as showrunner.

Cougar Town‘s current season comes to an end on April 9

‘Friends’ Reunion: Courteney Cox Heads to Matthew Perry’s ‘Go On’

Monica and Chandler are reuniting … sort of.
NBC’s freshman comedy Go On is staging its first onscreen Friends reunion, with Courteney Cox checking in for an episode of the Matthew Perry comedy, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.

Cox will join Perry, her former onscreen husband Chandler Bing on Friends, for an episode set to air in April. Cox play a character who meets Anne (Julie White), who then tries to set her up with Perry’s Ryan. It marks the duo’s first small-screen reunion since the Emmy-winning NBC comedy ended its 10-season run in 2004.

For Cox, who stars on TBS’ Cougar Town, the Go On guest stint also marks a reunion with former Friends executive producer Scott Silveri, with whom she worked on the series from 1996 through its final season.

This marks the latest Friends reunion for Cox, who has also guest starred on Lisa Kudrow’s Showtime adaptation Web Therapy (David Schwimmer has appeared as well). Kudrow, meanwhile, also appeared on an episode of Cougar Town during the comedy’s run on ABC, as did Jennifer Aniston, the latter of whom also guest starred on Cox’s FX comedy, Dirt. (Schwimmer, meanwhile, directed two episodes of Friends spinoff Joey, starring Matt LeBlanc.)

‘Cougar Town’s’ Courteney Cox says 15 episodes are ‘a perfect amount’

Thursday, Dec 13, 2012

Courteney Cox likes calling the shots, literally.

The “Friends” alum has been involved extensively behind the scenes on her subsequent series, the two-season FX tabloid drama “Dirt” and the comedy “Cougar Town,” which moves from ABC to TBS for its fourth season starting Tuesday, Jan. 8. She’s been an executive producer on both, and she also directs five of the upcoming “Cougar Town” episodes, including the season premiere.

Cox tells Zap2it she felt confident “Cougar Town” mentor Bill Lawrence (who continues as a series writer and consultant) “was going to give me that shot,” since she also directed two episodes late in the show’s ABC run. “Once I did the first one — which had a big ‘Braveheart’-type battle that let me have a good time and open the show up — it was like, ‘OK, good. Now we can trust her.’

“I’m also involved in editing the show, and I have been since the beginning,” Cox adds, “so it’s kind of a no-brainer that I became one of the three directors for this year.” One of the others is John Putch, the son of actress Jean Stapleton, alias Edith Bunker on the landmark show “All in the Family.”

Cox tackled her latest “Cougar Town” duties after directing last June’s movie “Tall Hot Blonde” for Lifetime. “I’m so proud of it,” she reflects of the true drama about a murder that resulted from an online hookup. “It was done in 16 days, and I wish Garret Dillahunt would get nominated for an Emmy for it. He was just amazing, and so was [co-star] Laura San Giacomo.”

If Cox is satisfied to be directing a third of the new “Cougar Town” stories, she’s also happy with the amount of acting work the season requires from her as newly remarried mom Jules. “I love doing 15 episodes,” she says. “It’s a perfect amount.”

Courteney Cox turns interior designer for charity

Friday, Sep 28, 2012

Hollywood actress Courteney Cox has turned interior designer as part of a new campaign to raise funds for a children’s health organisation.

The former Friends star has handpicked her favourite homewear items, including chairs, cushions and vases, to showcase on the Joss & Main website, reported Contactmusic.

“We are thrilled to present Courteney Cox’s Curate for a Cause collection. Inspired by her Malibu home’s signature ‘organic modern’ style, the Cougar Town actress brings A-list appeal to this exclusive array of furniture and accents,” the website reads.

A portion of the proceeds from any sales will go towards the Epidermolysis Bullosa Medical Research Foundation (EBMRF), to raise awareness of the tissue disease.

“Please check out my Curate for a Cause Sale to help raise funds for The Ebmrf,” Courteney posted on Twitter.

Bill Lawrence Won’t Be Cougar Town’s Showrunner Next Season

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

With Wednesday’s announcement that Cougar Town would officially be coming to TBS, we couldn’t help but ask star Courteney Cox the second burning question on our minds: Has she, like her alter ego Jules during last night’s episode, ever forgotten to flush? “I actually don’t flush a lot,” she admitted to Vulture at the Turner networks upfront luncheon at Del Posto. “That’s because I pee about five times during the night. If I flushed every time, somebody would would wake up. I flush when it’s important, you know?”

So that’s settled! As for the move from ABC to a new network, the actress couldn’t be happier about the cul-de-sac crew boozing into the New Year, and it’s all thanks to series creator Bill Lawrence’s “never say die” attitude. “You know, Bill kept saying this show is not going to go away, it’s not going to go away. When he speaks like that, you know that he means it. I don’t know what his plan was, but what he and ABC Studios did by pursuing this deal just shows how much faith they have in the show,” Cox said. “We love doing this show, and it’s a great fit because TBS really promotes their shows. We have a lot of fans that are very avid, we just need more of them. Being on TBS is a shot to get a new group of people to check us out.” The actress, who just finished directing the upcoming Lifetime movie Tallhotblonde, based on the true story of a romance that begins online and ends in murder, said she’s looking forward to spending some downtime with her daughter, Coco, 7, before Cougar Town resumes production on new episodes in August for a premiere in 2013. On the other hand, her wheels are already turning when it comes to cable’s near-limitless boundaries. “As a producer, I can’t wait. This is a fresh start. It will feel like the same show, but we’re going to have a new [showunner], there will be new people, new changes.”

That last comment from Cox set off our Spidey senses, since in all of the reporting about the show’s move to TBS, we hadn’t heard anything about staff changes on the show. Vulture contacted a rep for Lawrence, who confirmed that Cox hadn’t been sipping out of Big Carl for too long: It turns out Lawrence and co-creator Kevin Biegel are indeed planning to step back from day-to-day oversight of Cougar Town. They’ll remain actively involved in the creative direction of the show, but Lawrence, Biegel, and Cox are now hunting for a new showrunner to oversee the first batch of ten episodes for TBS. It’s unclear yet whether they’ll bring in someone from the outside or look from within the show’s current writing ranks.
